Response to Dweck: Yet and Not Yet

In this essay, I comment on Doctor Carol Dweck’s presentation entitled “The Power of Believing You Can Improve”.

Doctor Carol Dweck’s presentation entitled “The Power of Believing You Can Improve” compared the different types of mindset associated with the idea of “Yet and Not Yet”. I enjoyed how she introduced the topic of how the parents are raising their children in this generation and how that affects our mindsets. Also, how society has molded the mindsets of minorities, thus pushing minorities further away from the possibility of changing their future into something more.

In “Chapter 2 Key Findings” of How People Learn: Bridging Research and Practice, it is discussed how students learn and how they are hesitant or unable to grasp certain ideas because of their preconceptions not learned in the classroom. A particular quote from that reading that stuck out to me was “To develop competence in an area of inquiry, students must: (a) have a deep foundation o factual knowledge, (b) understand facts and ideas in the conceptual framework…” (2).  The ability of a student to do such things and to learn in progress in their education depends greatly on their own ability to face setbacks and failures.  I believe that this goes along with the idea of fixed and growth mindsets from Doctor Dweck’s presentation.  The students that she found in her studies to succeed in their learning were the ones with growth-mindsets.  They did not see failure or challenge as something that inhibits themselves, but as something that helps them grow.  This supports the article about how people learn in the way that to develop understanding you must work towards your goal to be able to have a chance at achieving it.
